As the Tamil saying goes, “Sevikku unavu illada podu siridalavu vayitrukkum unavu eeyappadum”. Audiences attending Basant Bahar are provided a visual treat as well as one for their culinary tastes. Food vendors catering Basant Bahar over the years have ranged from renowned delicious Indian restaurants in the area to Mom–and–Pop shops. They serve ethnic Indian food representing cuisines from across the different regions of India. The food ranges from simple starters (samosas, patties, etc.) to full course meals (vegetarian and non-vegetarian options) including sweets (jalebis, etc.) and specialty Indian beverages (chai, lassi, etc.). The vendors serve for a nominal cost to patrons. We take seriously the efficiency of service, timeliness, and everything associated with handling such a large audience and is a well organized, collaborative effort between the Humsub team and vendors.
We accept applications and proposals from vendors to cater for a 350–400 (plus) audience, including children. The menu selections needs to be limited to non–messy fast food or finger foods that can be easily consumed during scheduled breaks or between programs. We typically prefer and recommend vendors to offer menu items that cap per serving costs to no more $5 or $6 dollars.
